Fixed stars experiment

Since there's little talk of working with the fixed stars in the occult regions of cyberspace and since much of that talk is restricted to several well-defined areas, I thought of posting this article so whoever comes across it and is interested in giving it try can take a shot at working with fixed stars. And since working with the fixed stars is restricted to working with the 15 Behenian stars and some constellations, as depicted in old sources, I thought of choosing a star that's not part of that group and therefore we know next to nothing of it from a magical perspective.

What I mean is we do not have a clear set of magical powers attributed to this star, no correspondences or sigil and so on. Instead, we know certain things about it from an astrological perspective and so this experiment consists of addressing the star itself and having it do such and such things astrologers have observed regarding it.

The star in question is Rigel aka Beta Orionis, hence the picture of The Hunter at the start of the article. In this picture Rigel is the fat * thing in front of Orion's left ankle although sources mention it being of the left foot. Anyway, according to Ptolemy the star is "of the nature" of Jupiter and Saturn. It is said to give benevolence, honor, riches, happiness, glory, renown and make one inventive or skilled in mechanical ability - Vivian Robson.

Since we have no correspondences available, a simple white tea light candle and some general purpose incense like frankincense will do. A picture of Orion placed on the altar would also be a good choice.

As far as the election goes, I will follow the methods already available out there and use the Moon and the four principal angles of the chart to "pinpoint" Rigel. As a result, I have selected a date and a time that should be easily available to many: Thursday, February 10 at 7:36pm, GMT. It's after the initial Jupiter talisman election, leaving people enough time to work both rituals with ease should they choose to.

Rigel is currently at 17*08' Gemini and we see the waxing Moon applying to a conjunction with it within 1* while at the same time being on the Midheaven and involved in an applying trine with Saturn. Kinda funny how it turned out to be the day of Jupiter and both the Moon and Rigel are trine Saturn and if I'm not mistaking the selected time will be in the hour of Saturn.

So if you live in a different time zone you will have to edit the chart so that the Moon is on the Midheaven and conjunct Rigel. I'm aware this is not possible for everyone so in that case you'll have to wait for the following month(s).

As far as the ritual goes you'll cast the circle when the time arrives and then call on Rigel. In lack of any available conjuration, make your own. Luckily the site I tagged above offers quite a few bits of useful information for this so off the top I can think of:

"I call upon you, Rigel, who are also known as the Herdsman and the Conqueror! In the holy name YAH send your spirits swiftly to me so that they will answer my behest."

You can add the Orphic hymn to the stars before that. YAH is the godname of the Sephira Chockmah to which the zodiac is attributed so I usually make use of it in fixed stars workings. Feel free to repeat the conjuration and also to vibrate the name Rigel for a few times. Then you will ask the spirits to do such and such things for you or someone else, in case you have the person's link on the altar. Your intent should be in tune with Rigel's influence.

"Spirits of the fixed star Rigel, <your intent>, without harm &c. So mote it be! I offer you in return this candle and this incense. So mote it be!"

Then you can wait some 10 seconds or so and license the spirits to depart in your own words and close the ritual as usual.

The reason this is an experiment is self evident, since there's no magical stuff on this star so consequently it's highly likely no one's worked with it. I'm sure people have worked with Orion as a constellation, but I have yet come across any source mentioning magical workings with Rigel on its own. So if you do go ahead with this experiment do gimme a comment and lemme know how it went. More importantly, I'm interested in the way your intent will manifest later on and to what degree.

Hate on, dum-dums!

The Great Gazoo

Edit: Mr. El Maximo Exponente de la Magia decided to add his ever so Pagan touch to this particular working and fashioned a more complex, ever so Pagan invocation for this particular star that's part of Orion. Feel free to use it.

"I call upon you, Rigel, who are also known as the Herdsman and the Conqueror! In the holy name YAH send your spirits swiftly to me so that they will answer my behest. Great Sah, Sky God rising with the Dawn Who presages the rising of your sister/wife, Aset Sepdet. Your bright belt points the way to Sepdet, Her blue-white heart, and the coming of Aakhet, the Inundation that renews the Black Land of Khemet. Great is your care for us, oh Osiris, who came down to teach us the arts of civilization, law, and justice, who taught the first farmers to plant the wheat and the barley along the banks of the Nile. We greet you, whose office preserved Ma’at in the land with the benison of your sister/wife, Aset of the Throne! Oh Green Lord, whose face shines forth in the wheat and the barley as they arise from the renewed soil, after the Inundation brings Per-t, the Season of Growth. In your temple of Abydos, your priests prepare the renewed soil to plant the first seeds that will show you risen once more in your vigor. Bless the Two Lands, and all who live upon the Earth with your seed and growing crops! Serapis, Bull of His Mother, may your seed be potent for us! I call you Rigel to <your intent>, come forth as I chant your holy names.

Spirits of the fixed star Rigel, <your intent>, without harm &c. So mote it be! I offer you in return this candle and this incense. So mote it be!"
