Some dumbass used to teach that spiritual authority is gained by enumerating your earthly achievements to spirits when conjuring them. More exactly, one ought to list such achievements in the occult field.
This, of course, is utter bs! Telling the spirits you authored such and such books and seemingly scholastic papers, working such and such system for whatever amount of time, even bragging you're in the R.R. et A.C. don't amount to crap from the spirits' perspective. At best you'd bore them with your long grocery list. It is the initiation one undergoes for entering the Inner Order that will allow them to increase their spiritual authority. That is why Golden Dawners are introduced to working with spirits at Adeptus Minor and not prior (unless it's some fake order run by some Impotentor).
If the spirits sense you're spiritually shallow, they can fuck you up for having bothered them. This happens due to the fact you've got no power over them. The size of your online fanbase, the thickness of the few books you've written ages ago, or the fact you're pretending to work a certain system while doing something else entirely and imposing it as traditionally correct will do you no good. Nor will it grant you power to be obeyed by spirits.
That power rests solely within, not with outside fetishes of more or less furry content, pieces of wood tipped with shiny rocks, longswords, etc. As I mentioned in Words, such fetishes are mere add-ons that allow someone who's working with grimoires gain a little more edge. They still have to follow the preparatory period prior to a ritual, consisting of cleansing and purification, prayers and all that. It is that preparation that grants the person access to at least some amount of spiritual authority, to at least have the spirits arrive and not misbehave.
Having encountered your HGA and strengthened your connection with it helps a great deal, but that would imply performing a specific ordeal over a lengthy period. Additionally, you can get in touch within one such personal angel using one of good ol' Cornelius' methods.
You can also gain spiritual authority little by little through daily practice. And I mean daily practice, not the several days of preparation period mentioned in the grimoires one is to underground prior to doing once a month or even more rarely. Scott has done a great job detailing simple but effective daily practice sessions and from personal experience I endorse them.
As you can see in Scott's article, he instructs that first one should address heir angel, the intermediary between the person and God. Afterwards, one is to address God, having already had the attention of the angel, whose job among others is to assist and help the person get as close to God as possible. While the prayers themselves are simple and short, reciting them daily in this order and inside the magical space one had created will gradually increase the practitioner's spiritual authority.
That I why I consider people who do a ritual every month or every other month or so, with a preparatory period of several days prior to the ritual itself and nothing but research or something else entirely in between, Sunday magicianists.
