Thoughts on pathworking

I recently had a conversation with a reader of this blog concerning pathworking. Among other things, he asked me if I'm aware of any literature on this subject. I admitted to being uncultured and pointed him to Scott for details on Crowley's recordings of his experiences with the Aires. By the way, I recommend you read Scott's articles on the subject if you're interested, this one and this one, since they've helped me get started in this field.

The man also told me there's little out there in regards of actual experiences during these operations and I agree. Besides generalities on how to perform a pathworking, there's not much in regards to different minute details one can come across during a pathworking. But in my opinion that is to be expected since no author can cover the vast and diverse range of experiences. There's so much, even so little, one can come across and that renders every attempt to even try to paint several scenarios even in broad strokes, irrelevant.

I think it is important to keep in mind these experiences are subjective and personal to the individual that has them, before one begins pathworking. While there is definitely widely known symbolism regarding certain realms, like for example the planetary spheres, the way bits of that symbolism is revealed to each individual differs. I think this has to do with how each person's mind is structured, how both their logical and abstract mind work, the nature of the force they're working with at the time within their personal sphere of consciousness, the direction their magical path is taking them, etc. Moreover, some people can visualize things more clearly in their mind than others. Some have trouble holding on to what's being shown to them. Others lose focus quite quickly, etc.

From a practical perspective, I'd say it is best to undergo such an experience with purpose. What I mean is that while there's nothing wrong with going about through certain realms simply for the sake of it, or out of curiosity, it would be much better for the person to actually request certain things that would enrich their consciousness. Now, I'm sure some energies of that realm would rub off on the person's consciousness even if he or she is a curious passer by through that realm, but asking for something that would help you in your magical and/or mundane life should be preferred.

That which has been asked for will be imprinted into the person's consciousness through a series of symbols, sometimes even thoughts, emotions and feelings. While certain massages will be understood on the spot or shortly after they were received, some can take a while before the becomes aware of the whole depth of their meaning. Same is the case with any energies the person has "downloaded" from that realm, either consciously or otherwise. They can be felt and made use of either sooner or later.

I guess I should explain what I mean by consciously "downloading" energies. It just may happen that, upon asking for such and such during a pathworking, the person would be put through certain tests. These tests can vary and can be "physical" or mental, even energetic. By "physical" I mean the individual would have to take certain actions within that realm that require him or her to move around, etc. By mental I mean focusing certain things into manifesting or disappearing, moving them around with their mind, etc. By energetic I mean the person would use project energy from his or her astral body or receive energy.

Upon completion, the individual would be rewarded with whatever they had asked for. The way they receive it can also differ. It could be offered to them in the image of a cup they'd have to drink. They may have to bathe in a certain pool. They may be blasted by energy from a certain source, etc.

But that "download" could be achieved without the person realizing it. They may not be subjected to any tests. They may not even feel or "see" anything. Not saying that this would happen often, but it's not impossible. As I said before, I'm sure some energies of that realm would rub off on the person's consciousness even during a casual pathworking.

That would be my two cents on pathworking. Before I end this article through, I want to share a few tips I found useful. Take them as guidelines if you want although they may not apply to you (entirely).

The mental imagery is usually fuzzy, dream-like. It can blur out at times and that may pull you out of the experience. Apply focus to will it back again, then allow it to unfold and take shape on its own.

Go along with the scenery that is presented to you in the beginning, even if nothing shows up. If you get a blank image you can follow Scott's advice and imagine a scenery yourself. Sooner or later it will start acting independently to your imagination. You can also vibrate the godname of the force you're working with in your mind and await certain flashes of scenery. If that occurs, focus on willing them to stabilize. Lastly, the scenery may have nothing in common with the force, at least from your perspective. Go ahead and explore it regardless.

You may encounter a guide. It can present itself in any shape or form. Sometimes it can even lurk in the background without manifesting to you. In the latter case, go ahead with the exploration and in case you're there for a reason, proclaim it in your mind while exploring. If the guide shows up, test it. Scott recommends using Gematria. You can also vibrate the godname of the force at it and see how it reacts. If its image becomes more clear, it's your guide. If it blurs out, it's something else so move along. The same can be done by tracing the symbol of the force in front of it while vibrating the godname and asking it to do the same. You can even make it swear on such and such names of power it's your guide. Once it's established that's your guide, give it something in return. I usually light and incense stick beforehand and tell it to receive the smoke, but you can also share energy to it although that can drain you and make you lose focus faster further on. Offerings are not mandatory yet keep in mind it's impolite to visit someone in the home for the first time and not give them a present.

You don't need to hear the guide's words in your mind to communicate with it. If it's a humanoid or animal-like thing you can ask it to use sign language. It can also project symbols at you and it's best you ask it beforehand to project symbols of which it'll be easy for you to understand the literal meaning. You can also follow Scott's lead and ask it numbers as answers and look up their meaning later on. When you feel you're done thank the guide and leave. The guide may also tell you you're done, depending on various circumstances.
