Picatrix decan talisman - Dec 2020

Here's an easy to do scholastic image talisman from the Picatrix - Book I, Chapter 11, Arabic version. It's a talisman for the first decan of Sagittarius and I'm putting it out there for anyone interested in making it.

As in my previous article, the Picatrix instructs that the primary condition for making these talismans is to have the decan Lord (ruler) in the decan of choice. Mercury enters the first decan of Sagittarius on Dec 1 at 8pm GMT and it exits it on Dec 8 between 5 and 6am GMT, so you'd have about a week's time to do it.

The Picatrix description of this decan is the following:

"Consider the picture of three bodies; the first is red, the second is white, and the third is red. This image appears in the first phase of Sagittarius. It is also the phase of Mercury, and it indicates valor, activity, pleasure, patience and chivalry."

The words in bold letters represent the powers of the decan, so you can consecrate the talisman based on them.

The Picatrix gives secondary recommendations for these talismans: to make it at sunrise in the day of the decan Lord and having said Lord involved in an aspect with the Sun, if possible. Now, Mercury is always close to the Sun and it will conjunct the Sun in Sagittarius in December. As you can see in the chart at the moment of Mercury's entry into Sagittarius, it is already applying to a conjunction with the Sun.

As Mercury enters into Sagittarius on a Tuesday, the following day is his day and so you can make use of it and make this talisman at sunrise. According to the astro site, sunrise on Dec 2 takes place at 7:52am GMT, making it the hour of Mercury - keep in mind that the Sun has to be over the horizon (in the 12th house) for the hour of Mercury to begin. Here's the chart for that time and keep in mind it's for GMT:

If you cannot make the talisman then, you can do it when Mercury is culminating, i.e. conjunct the Midheaven. Here's the chart for the same day, with Mercury culminating at 11:04am GMT.

The time of the second chart is likely not to fall in the hour of Mercury, but it is the day of Mercury, nonetheless. In this second election, the decan itself is culminating as well. The only downside I see to these elections is that the Moon is waning and while very strong in her domicile, is involved in an inconjunction with Mercury. Yet it is a separating aspect.

If you want to make this talisman you'll have to cast a chart for that day (Dec 2) for your location and observe the time of sunrise or the time Mercury is culminating and do it then. Otherwise you can make the talisman in the second, third, or fourth hours of Mercury. Or you can cast the chart for the following day and see if Mercury happens to be culminating during his hour. I for one wouldn't make this talisman when Mercury comes within 8° of the Sun, so I would recommend not to postpone the ritual for too long.

Anyway, when you're ready to make the talisman, grab an unused piece of paper and draw the image of the talisman - don't go artistic on it if you're not able to; see the first image in the article. Then hold the image over some incense smoke, asking the spirits of the decan to consecrate it for your purpose. You can use Mercury incense or plain frankincense. You can use resins, incense sticks, or cones. And you can also light a white tea light next to the incense. You can cast a circle really quick just to assure yourself you've locked the ritual in the precise time you selected.

The names of this decan are, according to various sources: Ḥer-Ab-Uia, Hre-ua, Anatreth, Ortusa, Sebos, Clinothois, Eregbuo, Loimos, Tolmophta. You can make use of one, several, or all of these names in your petition. If you want to go more Qabalistic you can also make use of the godhead of Sagittarius and the name of the angel of the decan: VYHH (Vay-Heh) and Mishrath. So you can say something like:

"Oh ye, spirits of the first decan of Sagittarius, know as Her-Ab-Uia, Hre-ua, Anatreth, Ortusa, Sebos, Clinothois, Eregbuo, Loimos, Tolmophta, in the name of the great god VYHH and by the angel Mishrath, manifest before me in order to answer my behest."

Then say the following while holding the talisman over the incense smoke:

"Oh ye spirits of the first decan of Sagittarius, consecrate this talisman made in the image of your decan, so that from now on it will <your intent> (without harm done to its carrier). So mote it be!"

Hold the talisman over the smoke while praying for your petition and meditating on it. When you feel the talisman is consecrated, wrap it in clean cloth or place it inside a new envelope and leave it next to the incense (and candle) until such time it burns out completely. Then take the talisman and wear it on yourself, while making sure you don't damage it.

In the mean time, thank the spirits of the decan for their arrival and assistance. Offer them the incense (and candle) and license them to depart.

"Oh ye, spirits of the first decan of Sagittarius, because you came to my call and offered your assistance, I hereby license you to depart to your abode. Go now in peace, in the name of the great god VYHH, harming none along the way, and let there be peace between us. So mote it be!"

You're done!

Hate on, dum-dums!

The Great Gazoo
