I've been doing this exercise for more than a few years now and it's proven very useful for me, as well as for others that have tried it (for long enough). It's not something I've invented, but something I've borrowed and adapted from others' works and experience. Come to think of it, I came across its core technique while watching Birch's videos some eight years ago.
In time, I adapted that technique to encompass more willpower and visualization. Moreover, I focused on the intent behind the exercise and realized it can be changed depending on the goal one has in mind whenever performing it.
However, keep in mind this exercise has its limitations and you should not expect to observe miraculous effects even after performing it for long with the same intent in mind, something I'm sure some people would do when it comes to healing. I'm not saying it's impossible to witness miracles while doing it, but that it's very much improbable.
First of all, the exercise requires you to focus on your body and to feel it to the point you can easily shift your awareness into certain body parts. Keep in mind that human consciousness has us being aware of our face mostly since there's very many nerve pathways in this part of our body, especially in and around the sense organs on and close to our face. Therefore, it can prove a bit challenging for people to shift that awareness into other body parts.
That being said, keep in mind you don't have to force yourself to be as aware of them as you are of your face. Forcing it would only tire you and you'd lose focus on the other steps of the exercise. As such, it's better to be as relaxed as possible in order to allow for as much of your awareness to shift into the desired body parts.
Secondly, you will have to use your visualization to imagine your body growing energetic appendices and we'll get to that later on. It would be best to be able to feel those appendices to a certain degree, but lacking that sensation is no biggie. Again, there's no need to force anything as not to lose focus for the steps ahead.
Thirdly, you will have to use your will to direct the exercise each step of the way until its completion. The important thing is to make sure your will is as much focused on the steps ahead as it is on the current step, otherwise you'd get stuck or snap out of it. That's why I kept repeating there's no need to force things.
While nothing bad would happen to you if you end te exercise prematurely for various reasons, either because you tire quickly, you can't go through to the following steps, or you get interrupted, you can very well experience a momentary drop in your energy levels. It's nothing a quick rest or a nutritious meal won't fix, but you wouldn't want that to happen if you've got stuff to do after the exercise. The idea is to improve your personal energies, not damage or deplete them, so it's best to perform this exercise right before sleep until such time you can do it on the go during the day (something I'm sure you will easily be able to after a a certain number of repetitions).
Here is the exercise:
1. Make yourself comfortable by sitting on a chair. You can also lie down on your backside, but the sitting position would be of better help for the next step (at least at first).
2. Visualize growing energy channels out of the soles of your feet. You can imagine them unite into a larger one at one point if that helps your visualization and sense of them.
3. Will the energy channels go down into the ground irrespective of whether you're at ground level or not. If you're on a higher floor you can imagine them going through each floor or your building and down into the ground, then deeper still.
4. Visualize the channels reaching the center of the Earth and connecting with it. You can imagine that center any way you want, be it a bright glowing rock, a sphere of molten iron, etc.
5. a) In your mind, verbalize the first part of your intent
"Mother Earth take away the energies that are causing me harm"
and imagine those energies flow out of you through those channels and into the Earth's center.
5. b) Verbalize the second part of your intent
"And fill me with energies that will benefit me"
and imagine energy from the Earth's center flowing through those channels back into you and filling your whole body.
You can visualize the energies in both a) and b) any way you like, whether the former as dark and murky and the latter as bright and colored, etc.
6. After you've felt you're full of the new energies, give thanks and imagine the energy channels retracting all the way back into your feet.
(7. Optionally, you can contemplate the experience for a short while afterwards. Feel the new energies stabilizing inside you. Try to notice whether they've concentrated in certain areas or not, etc.)
The whole thing should last for no more than five minutes, but you could either do it far quicker or take your time.
One of the extra uses I've found for this exercise is that of grounding and I can perform it quite rapidly. For this purpose I simply ask for Mother Earth to ground me at #5 after connecting the energy channels to the core. I don't visualize anything else and instead I often have an almost instant feeling of being grounded. I use this whenever I feel I've overstretched on mental endeavors or in several other cases.
Another use I've found for it is for healing although again, one should not expect miraculous results. As in the case of the methods presented in Señor Shaman's book, methods this exercise can be used in connection to, it is better used for prevention or for recovering from an illness as a complementary method to medicine (and magical workings in which strong spiritual power is employed). It can also be used as complementary treatment, but keep in mind it can be a bit draining if halted midway.
Additionally, it can be used in connection to the Solar exercise. This way, one would benefit from both solar and earthly energies. Thus, energy from both forces that are vital for life is being used.
Moreover, this exercise can be used to access other energies. Instead of energy channels coming out of the soles of your feet, you can imagine one coming out of the top of your head and connecting to the "center of the sky" (which you'd imagine to your liking). Afterwards, you can ask Father Sky to help you in a similar way.
But whereas the energies from the ground better assist you physically, the heavenly ones better assist you mentally. Again, I will not go into mental disorder territory, but this exercise will help you clear your head, among other things.
Who says you don't need energy work?
